Clearing cloudy swimming pool water - (864) 546-1257

Flocculation of your swimming pool water helps to keep the pool crystal clear.

Flocculant is also now as coagulant and aids the filter in trapping the suspended particles in the water that are causing it to look cloudy.

Flocculants can be used two different ways:

  • Full Floc is when you add the chemical to the water and recirculate it for an hour or so and then shut the system down.  Make sure the filter valve is on recirculate and not filtration.  After about 24 to 48 the debris will settle to the bottom allowing you to vac the water out to waste.  Use a external pump so the debris does not reenter the pool water.  Palmetto Pool and Spas have trained technicians and the equipment necessary to perform this process for you.  If you need help with this process please do not hesitate to call us (864) 546-1257.  The flocculant works quicker in a higher PH (around 8.0).

  • Filter Aid is when the flocculant is used during the filtration process.  The flocculant works by bringing the particulate matter and the organisms out of solution.  This process is called coagulation.  Then it will bring these two solids together which is called flocculation.  Once this process takes place it will make it easier for the filter to trap it.  These particles will stay on the top of the sand in the filter until a backwash is performed.  Once the backwash is performed, you will need to add more of the flocculant to the pool.

Sometimes it can feel like you need a chemistry degree to keep you pool water healthy and clear.  Well, fortunately, a pool owner doesn't have to be, but there are some basic things you need to know when it comes to maintaining your water.  We are going to cover the main components in swimming pool water chemistry.  If you manage these items effectively it will create a enjoyable and healthy water that will also save you money this season.

Here are the main components to the balance of your pool water's chemistry:

  • PH - This is the amount of Hydrogen that is in your pool water.  PH needs to stay in a range of 7.2 to 7.8.  The PH is crucial to stay in solution and when it doesn't it can cause a reaction to all other areas of the water's chemistry.  PH is the relative acidity of the pool water.  It gets lowered by the addition of the acidic rain in your pool.  Ideally, it is best to keep it within the range of 7.2 and 7.8.  When the PH lowers due to the rain, the water becomes acidic, and your chlorine loses its power quickly.  This will also cause corrosion of your pool equipment.

  • Total Alkalinity - You should keep this in a range of 80 to 120 PPM.  This is essentially the ability of a solution to neutralize hydrogen ions.  This is a very important piece to the water chemistry and when it is out of solution it can impact many different areas of your water chemistry.  Total Alkalinity is the result of many alkaline materials in your water that includes carbonates, hydroxides, and bicarbonates.  This is your PH buffer.  If the TA is too high it can cause cloudy water and reduces the effectiveness of the Chlorine.  If the TA is too low it causes the PH to lower rapidly and causes etching and corrosive water.
  • Calcium Hardness- You should try to keep the calcium hardness between 200 and 400 PPM.  Low calcium hardness results in corrosive water.  The plaster surface and tile grout softens and erodes.  The surface can also encounter staining.  High calcium hardness results in scale formation on the surface and scaling in the pipes.  High calcium will result in cloudy water and sore eyes.
  • Free Chlorine - This is the chlorine that is killing the bacteria and reducing the algae outbreaks in your pool.

We hope this answers some questions for you pertaining to water chemistry in your pool.  If you would like one of our CPO certified technicians to help you with yours please do not hesitate to give us a call.  We have seasonal maintenance packages that can take care of this for you.  We can come out, analyze your pool, and help you with a balancing & sanitizing plan.

Commercial swimming pool filter maintenance

Did you know that your commercial pool's filter should have it's sand changed every 3-5 seasons?

Here's why?

The sand in your pool's filter has been cut to .55mm in diameter and has sharp edges when new.  The sharp edges is what makes the sand filter help capture the particles in your pool water.  Over time these sharp edges get smoothed out and the pool filter's efficiency goes down.  This will result in your filtration equipment to work harder which will raise your utility consumption and increase your chemical usage.

We can HELP!

Palmetto Pools and Spas is a full service commercial pool company.

Give us a call and we would be glad to help your subdivision with this!

Here are the steps we perform in our commercial pool filter sand change

  1.  We remove the top to the filter and inspect the gaskets on and in the multi port valves.  These gaskets get worn down from the handle being moved to different positions.
  2.  The filter is then inspected for signs of ware and that the standpipe is in good shape.
  3. The drain plug is released at the bottom of the tank and we carefully remove the sand from the filter.
  4. NEVER - tip the filter to remove the sand!!!  This will put pressure on the laterals and break them.
  5. Once the sand is removed our technicians will inspect the laterals to make sure they are functioning properly.  This is crucial so that none of the sand will return into the pool.
  6. We now replace the drain cap, the laterals, the standpipe, and add water to the tank.  Adding water to the tank will help cushion the laterals from the weight of the sand.
  7. After the new sand is installed we replace the top and the multi port valve.
  8. Now we restart the system.  It is very important that you restart the system in the backwash position.  This will help flush out the dust from the sand and allows the sand to settle properly around the laterals after the backwash is complete.
